TAP Grows Corporate Tax Team

Tax Advisory Partnership (“TAP”), the specialist tax services firm with offices in Leeds and London, is set for further significant growth in its corporate tax advisory business following a number of recent new appointments.

TAP has appointed Helen Mallalieu to the corporate tax team to work alongside Leeds Office partner Russ Cahill servicing their expanding network of regional and national clients. They have also teamed up with consultant Gillian Abramson to provide advice on Innovation Reliefs, such as Research and Development tax credits and the patent box regime. Unusually for a specialist tax firm, TAP have also brought on board patent lawyer Rob Spavin to work alongside Gillian with client companies to assist them with the intellectual property aspects of claims under the patent box regime.

Helen has spent her career to date with a Big 4 firm specialising in corporate tax and has over 10 years’ experience. She has worked with all types of businesses from listed companies to smaller local entities and had a specific focus on privately owned companies. Helen commented: “I am looking forward to the new challenges provided by my role at TAP and being able to use my experience to benefit our clients”.

Gillian also has a Big 4 background in tax, having again had over 10 years’ experience of working in the local market with PwC. Gillian has focused on R&D tax reliefs for several years, leading the North East R&D team at her previous firm as well as being one of their key national R&D technical specialists. The service that Gillian can offer companies in assisting with claiming Innovation Reliefs, supplements the existing TAP expertise in corporation taxes, international tax planning, employment taxes and personal taxes. Gillian says: “I am particularly looking forward to offering a high quality service in a more personal way and with more flexibility for the client.”

To supplement this, Rob brings over 15 years’ experience as a patent lawyer working with technology-rich clients, from University start-ups to multinational companies across a wide-range of sectors. He has assisted them in acquiring, managing and exploiting patent rights. Rob’s role within TAP is focused particularly on the new tax breaks that apply to companies with patents to ensure clients make the best use of the new Patent Box regime. Rob commented: “The Patent Box is a ‘game-changing’ Government initiative for clients working with patentable inventions. I am joining TAP to assist innovative companies in making the most of its potential, including considering where patents may not previously have been registered.”

Russ Cahill, TAP Leeds Office partner, explained:

“Helen, Gillian and Rob bring an exciting range of complimentary skills and experience to TAP, which will enable us to expand our services for our clients.

TAP is all about providing tax services with a difference. We continually strive to provide our clients with the same technical quality as the largest advisory firms but delivered in a way that meets their objectives first. Our clients definitely value our approach and our success to date allows us to continue investing in top talent. Helen, Gillian and Rob are all critical elements in the next exciting stage of TAP.”
