Thinking of Relocating? How Malta’s Tax Rules Benefit British Expats

Our tax partner, Jamie Favell, was recently featured in The Times, offering expert insights on a rising trend: more British taxpayers are moving to Malta and other destinations in search of a better quality of life and a more favourable tax regime. The article reviews why Malta, in particular, stands out—and how specialist advice is crucial for those contemplating a move.

Why Malta Appeals to British Expats

Malta’s combination of lifestyle benefits and straightforward tax rules is increasingly attractive for Brits seeking a change. Jamie highlighted that Malta’s tax system is “straightforward,” owing in part to its historic ties with the UK and the shared use of English as one of its official languages.

Key reasons Malta is proving a strong draw:

  • Malta has retained the concept of  domicile and a remittance basis tax regime (the UK's remittance basis regime was abolished from 6 April 2025).

  • Malta’s tax residency scheme offers a flat 15% tax rate on foreign income remitted to Malta, with no local tax on overseas income kept outside of Malta.

  • Capital gains made outside of Malta are exempt from tax, even if the proceeds are remitted to Malta.

  • Malta has an extensive network of Double Tax  Agreements in place, importantly for our clients these include the UK and US.

  • English is an official language, and everyday life features familiar touches for British expats, making the transition smoother.

  • Malta’s EU status and healthcare access further help new arrivals feel confident and secure.
